Compress GIF
Make a GIF smaller without making it look worse. It's re-encoded right here in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How much smaller?
It depends on the GIF. On a test set of 281 GIFs made from film clips, screen recordings, stickers and memes, lessgif's files were a median 40% smaller than gifsicle's lossy optimizer at the same measured quality. GIFs that were made carelessly shrink the most. A GIF that has already been squeezed hard may not get smaller at all; then you keep the original.
What does the quality setting do?
Lower quality lets the encoder bend each pixel's colour a little so the file compresses better. At 100 nothing is changed: the GIF is stored again exactly, which sometimes saves a few percent. 90 is very hard to tell apart from the original; 70 is a good default.
Can I make it fit a size limit?
Yes. Tick Fit a size limit instead and enter the limit, for example 8 MB for a chat app or 256 KB for an emoji. lessgif finds the best quality that fits, and only shrinks the picture if even low quality is too big.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. Everything runs in this browser tab with WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works for private files.
