Video to GIF

Turn a clip from a video into a GIF. Pick where it starts and ends, how big it is and how smooth. The video never leaves your device.

Why are lessgif's GIFs smaller?

Most GIF makers first reduce the colours, then dither, then look for pixels that didn't change, and each step adds its own error. lessgif makes one decision per pixel, weighing how much each choice costs in bytes against how visible its error would be. On 363 film clips its GIFs were half the size of gifski's at the same SSIMULACRA2 score, a measure of how close a picture looks to the original. Up close, lessgif's GIFs show a bit more fine grain in flat areas such as sky.

Which videos work?

Anything your browser can play: MP4 (H.264) and WebM work everywhere, MOV from iPhones works in Safari and usually in Chrome. Long or high-resolution clips need a lot of memory, so the browser version is limited to clips up to about a minute at normal sizes. The lessgif app has no such limit.

What frame rate and size should I use?

15 frames per second at 480 pixels wide looks smooth and stays small. Each step up in size or frame rate makes the file noticeably bigger; for chat apps, try the size limit option instead.
